- Viscoelastic memory foam
- 40 kg/m³ density
- Slow recovery
- 1" to 6" thick

How memory foam behaves
- Moulds to shape. Under warmth and weight it softens and takes the shape of whatever presses into it, spreading the load instead of pushing back.
- Slow recovery. Lift the weight and it returns to full height over a few seconds. That slow return is the material working as intended, not a fault.
- A comfort layer. It works well added on top of firmer foam to soften an existing cushion.
- Different from reflex foam. Reflex foam springs straight back and suits firm seating. Memory foam sinks slowly and spreads pressure, which is what you want in a topper or a soft pad.
Where it works best
- Chair and seat pads: dining chairs, desk chairs, office seats and stool tops.
- Mattress toppers and camper or caravan bunks.
- Comfort layers on top of firmer foam.
- Headboards and padding where a slow, moulding feel is wanted.
- Pet beds.
Worth knowing before you buy: memory foam on its own is not the best choice for a deep sofa seat cushion. It compresses under a concentrated sitting load and does not hold a firm edge. For sofa seats, use it as a top layer over a firmer foam core.
Size guide
Each option above is listed as length × width × thickness. Most sizes are in inches, from 10" × 10" seat pads to 40" × 69" sheets, in thicknesses from 1" to 6". A small number of sizes are listed in centimetres, such as 80cm × 50cm × 10cm. Cutting tolerance is approximately ±5mm, because foam is compressible.
| Thickness | Typical uses |
|---|---|
| 1" (25mm) | Comfort layer over existing foam, thin chair pads |
| 2" (50mm) | Dining and office chair seats, pet beds, bunk toppers |
| 3" (75mm) | Mattress toppers, camper bunks, deeper seat pads |
| 4" (100mm) | Full-depth toppers and van mattresses |
Measuring tips
- Measure the cover, not the old foam. Old foam can lose 10 to 20mm of height.
- Open the zip, lay the cover flat and measure inside seam to seam.
- Round up, not down. Foam should fill the cover with a slight squeeze so it sits plump.
Fire safety
Meets Schedule 1, Part 1 of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988.
Questions people ask
Why does it feel firm when it first arrives?
Memory foam softens with warmth. When cold it feels much firmer than it does after twenty minutes in a warm room. In a cold conservatory or an unheated caravan it will always feel firmer than it does indoors.
Will it look flat when I unwrap it?
Thicker pieces are compressed and wrapped. Unwrap it, lay it flat in a warm room and it recovers full height within 24 to 48 hours. A faint new-foam odour clears after a day or two of airing.
Can I trim it myself?
Yes. An electric carving knife is the best tool. Mark your line with a marker pen and a straight edge, then use long, slow strokes.
Can I use it outdoors?
No. Memory foam absorbs and holds water and takes days to dry.
